Essential practical and surgical skills for Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Focusing on a number of commonly used practical and surgical skills in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, this hands-on course uses a combination of theory and practical demonstration.

You will have opportunities to practice procedures on our state-of-the-art simulation equipment and to collaborate with industry partners. You will work with leading specialists in the field, receiving expert feedback on your technique, along with tips and guidance for refining your skills.

This is a hybrid course, with online learning elements to be completed ahead of the two workshops, the first of which is obstetrics focused, the second centred on gynaecological competences.

  • Cervical Cancer in Pregnant Women (CCIP) in Non-Primary Care Settings
  • CTG interpretation and FBS
  • Electrosurgery (including understanding principles and pitfalls)
  • Endoscopic equipment

  • Hysteroscopy
  • Insertion of Mirena
  • Instrument handling
  • Intra-Uterine Contraceptive Device
  • Knot tying
  • Laparoscopic entry technique
  • Manual removal of placenta
  • Opening and closing the abdomen
  • Surgical Asepsis and Surgical Etiquette
  • Suturing
  • Ventouse and forceps delivery

This course is mandatory for Basic Specialist Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. We recommend completing this course in your first year of BST.
