An introduction to health research

Research is an important aspect of medical training. Completing a piece of research gives you a thorough understanding of evidence-based clinical practice, research methodology and critical thinking. It also demonstrates your ability to finish tasks and balance the conflicting pressures of clinical, academic and personal demands.

This one-hour online course, which can be completed any time, provides expert advice on designing a research project. You will be guided through important concepts to be aware of and common pitfalls to consider.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

- Describe and compare the main types of studies used in health research
- Devise a research study protocol
- Appraise systematic reviews and meta-analyses
- Describe the statistical methods used to evaluate study findings in health research
- Perform basic statistical tests.

Who is this course suitable for ?

This course is mandatory for doctors in Higher Specialist Training and those in their third year of Basic Specialist Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
