Quality Improvement in Action

CPD Credits19

Learn how to complete a quality improvement project in your workplace

Quality Improvement in healthcare is a science that uses sophisticated tools and techniques to systematically introduce and embed changes to healthcare delivery. A lot of the time, these changes are focused on improving a specific local service, such as reducing the average turnaround time in a hospital's Emergency Department.

New QI Guide and Toolkit

This practical four-month course, which is suitable for all healthcare workers, teaches you about the tools and techniques necessary to undertake – and complete – a quality improvement project in the workplace. Each participant in the course chooses a workplace-based project on which to work during the course.

You will see how quality improvement theory and methodology can lead to tangible, measurable outcomes such as quicker access to care, fewer adverse events, cost savings, reduced length of stay and more prudent use of resources.

What you will learn

You will learn how to:

  • Identify areas for improvement in your local setting
  • Use tried and tested quality improvement tools and techniques
  • Implement a quality improvement project in your local setting

It was well balanced and most inspiring for me to have learned the methodology that could be used to improve the most simplest things we take for granted in everyday life to trying to tackle the things we may feel are daunting. If you are passionate about and love what you do and are keen to make a difference, then you’ve chosen the right course. It certainly is the most pragmatic and free-spirited course with a fair amount of learning thrown in for great measure and it has truly been a gift that will keep on giving to me long after my having completed it."

What to expect

When you enrol onto the Quality Improvement in Action course, we expect you to complete our Fundamentals of Quality Improvement 1 CPD online module as precourse work. You will be given access to these materials and other course information 4 weeks before the date of the first session.

The Quality Improvement in Action course will take place virtually on zoom over four mandatory sessions: two of 6 hours duration and two of 3.5 hours duration. This programme is approved for 19 CPD on completion.

Sessions are interactive and dynamic, facilitated by QI expert faculty and will involve planned and coordinated pre-session exploratory learning in addition to project work.

Learning group members will be encouraged to support and connect with one another and submit small project-based homework items (e.g. SMART project aim, driver diagram, PDSA testing cycles) online between sessions. Developmental feedback will be provided on homework.

During the course you will be required to carry out a quality improvement project in the workplace. You will be invited to submit a presentation of your final project for inclusion on the new RCPI Sharing Hub which is currently in development.
