About This Diploma

Infectious diseases (ID) are some of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally, with two-thirds of the deaths of children under five years of age being caused by infectious diseases. The prevention and treatment of infections is a priority for global health. Malaria, Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS continue to contribute significantly to the global burden of disease and in addition to the SARS -COV2 pandemic, the focus on the prevention and management of ID is at its greatest. In addition, hospital-based infections and antibiotic resistance are ongoing, urgent challenges which every health worker should be prepared for.

 This Royal College of Physicians of Ireland nine-month Professional Diploma in Infectious Diseases, delivered in conjunction with iheed, is a new online learning programme designed specifically to cater for busy healthcare professionals.

Who Is This Programme Aimed At?

What You Will Learn

This programme provides comprehensive training in infectious diseases medical care. The programme aims to develop clinically focused diagnostic skills through the use of interactive patient cases.   • • Demonstrate appropriate history-taking, examination and communication skills including sensitivity to the psychosocial issues faced by infectious diseases patients and their families.
  • • Apply current international evidence and best-practice principles in the evaluation of a patient presenting with an infectious disease.
  • • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving in the treatment and management of infectious diseases within a learner’s professional scope of practice and to recognize when onward referral is required
  • • Evaluate strategies for management of infectious diseases in the context of public and global health
  • • Assess the infectious disease risk associated with travel and apply evidence-based approaches to prevention of illness and management of tropical infections.
  • • Explain appropriate approaches to the care of specific patient populations including paediatrics, obstetrics, homeless, migrant, LGBTQ+ and people who inject drugs
  • • Demonstrate application of the principles of service provision for HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections
