About This Course
There has been a significant rise in the prevalence of food allergy in children, and allergy-focused care should place the child at the centre of the clinical care pathway. Food allergy can be classified into IgE mediated and non IgE mediated reactions.
This 45-minute online course will introduce you to core concepts regarding food allergy you will encounter in your role, including:
• The difference between IgE and non-IgE mediated food allergy
• The development of food allergy, and the common causes of food allergy
• Food allergy signs and symptoms
• The importance of taking an allergy-focused history
• Investigating and preventing suspected allergic disease
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, you will be able to:
• Differentiate IgE from non-IgE mediated food allergy
• Understand food allergy epidemiology
• Identify the risk factors for development of food allergy, as well as the typical signs and symptoms of food allergy
• Recognise the features of anaphylaxis and know how to manage it
• Describe non allergic causes of urticaria
• Take an allergy-focused history, and identify the investigations used in food allergy
• Understand the key principles of allergy prevention
• Describe the common causes of IgE mediated food allergy, and the basic principles of the management of IgE mediated food allergy
• Explain the impact of food allergy on quality of life
• Identify a management approach to non IgE mediated milk allergy

This course is mandatory for BST Paediatrics trainees. It is also suitable for all doctors working in General Paediatrics and primary care physicians.
