The Junior Obstetrics & Gynaecology Society (JOGS) is holding its Annual Scientific Meeting on Friday 26 November 2021.

The theme of this year's event is 'The Future of Training'.

About the event

The event will take place as a webinar. Delegates who have been assigned an oral presentation or a three-minute poster oral will present online. Poster presentations will be available online to review and the presentations will be judged remotely.

In addition, we are delighted to welcome Prof. Séan Daly, National Speciality Director for Obstetrics and Gynaecology, to give a short presentation on the new changes to the HST scheme.

The JOGS AGM will take place at the end of the meeting - a call for nominations for the various committee roles will be sent to the JOGS membership separately. The meeting will be closed with the presentation of prizes for the winning abstracts in their category after the AGM.

 

This event is a benefit of your Membership and Fellowship and is FREE for RCPI Trainees, Members and Fellows who are in good standing. There is a €50.00 fee for all other attendees.

Oral Presentation Judges

Dr Deirdre Hayes-Ryan

Dr Deirdre Hayes-Ryan is a medical graduate of the National University of Ireland, Galway and a member of both the Royal College of Physicians Ireland and the Royal College of Obstetricians UK. She received her PhD in Medicine and Health from University College Cork in 2020 for her work investigating the potential use of placental growth factor in suspected preterm pre-eclampsia.

Following her CSCST in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, she undertook an ASPIRE fellowship in 2020 in early pregnancy & ambulatory gynae at the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin. During this fellowship, she completed a placement in Homerton University Hospital, East London in their abortion services department. On her return to Dublin, she established Irelands first manual vacuum aspiration clinic in the Rotunda Hospital, offering out-patient uterine aspiration for both miscarriage and pregnancy termination. In 2021 she was appointed as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital and will be taking on the role of clinical lead of early pregnancy and termination of pregnancy.

Dr Michael O'Leary

Dr Michael O'Leary qualified from UCD in 1998. He trained in Ireland in Dublin and Galway before travelling to Australia and New Zealand to complete a RANZCOG fellowship in Gynaecological Oncology. He has been in post in Galway since 2009. He is the NCCP national consultant liaison for Gynaecological Oncology. He is the RCPI BST and HST coordinator for the west of Ireland. He is the treasurer of ISGO.

Poster Presentation Judges

Dr Alison DeMaio

Dr Alison DeMaio is a post-CSCST ASPIRE Fellow in minimally invasive gynaecologic surgery in Cork University Maternity Hospital. She obtained a degree (BS) in Biology from the University of Kentucky in 2007, and graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2012. As part of her current training program, Alison is gaining proficiency in advanced benign gynaecologic surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques.

Dr Claire McCarthy

Dr Claire McCarthy is currently a post-CSCST Fellow in Maternal Medicine in the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin. Following an undergraduate honours degree in Medicine (UCC 2011), she has been awarded an MSc. in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (UCC 2014), a Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Management (RCSI 2020) and an Advanced Diploma in Medical Law (Kings Inns, 2021). Claire completed the DOWH (2012), MRCPI (2013) and MRCOG (2017) during her speciality training. She was awarded the RCPI Corrigan Medal in 2013 and the ALSG Mike Davis Bursary in 2019. To date, she has authored two book chapters, 30 articles in peer reviewed journals, with 19 published abstracts. She has presented 25 oral and 76 poster presentations nationally and internationally. Additionally, she is a BSCCP-accredited Colposcopist and Colposcopy trainer. Claire’s current research focuses on Quality Improvement and Medical Education, predominantly in the Obstetric setting.

How to join this webinar

First, you must book your place at the webinar on this web page. On the day, you must sign into our virtual learning environment RCPI Brightspace.

On the day of the event, the steps are:

  • Log in to www.rcpi.ie with your username and password (the same credentials used to book this event)
  • Click on the link for RCPI Brightspace
  • In your list of courses you will see Junior Obstetrics & Gynaecology Society (JOGS) Annual Scientific Meeting 2021 - Click on this.
  • Click on "Join the Live Webinar" - This will launch Zoom, the system we are using for live webinars

Note, the webinar will only become available to watch at 8:00am on the day, but we recommend logging in ten minutes ahead of time.

To join this webinar on Zoom you will need a computer (Windows or Apple) or mobile device with internet access and speakers.

If you're joining on a computer

If you're joining the webinar on a computer you can use the Zoom desktop website. You do not need to download the Zoom app - if you see a pop up message about the app, you can dismiss this.

The Zoom website functions best on Google Chrome.

When you click on the link for "Join the Live Webinar" you will see a message asking you to open Zoom. Click on “Open Zoom”.

You will then be asked for your name and email address. Once you’ve entered these details, click on “Join Webinar”.

If you’re joining on a mobile device

If you're watching the webinar on a mobile device you will need to download the Zoom app. To save time on the day, we recommend downloading the app in advance:

When you open the Zoom app click on “Join a Meeting”. You will need to enter the meeting ID number. The ID number for this week's event will be sent to you via email beforehand.

How to submit questions to the panel

Before the event

If you have any questions for our panel please email them to conferences@rcpi.ie and we will endeavour to have these answered as part of the event. Alternatively, you can submit questions via Twitter @RCPI_news.

During the event

We are now using Zoom to broadcast our live webinars. When you open Zoom to watch the live webinar you will be able to submit questions to the panel during the event.

To submit questions to the panel:

  • Open the Q&A window in Zoom while you are watching the live event
  • Type your question into the Q&A box and click Send
  • Check Send Anonymously if you do not want your name attached to your question in the Q&A

It may not be possible to answer all questions we receive.
