Hot Topics for Acute Physicians: Cardiology

The Institute of Medicine is pleased to continue Hot Topics for Acute Physicians which is a monthly webinar series discussing topics relevant to the acute physician in specialties across the spectrum of medicine.

This webinar will focus on Hot Topics in Cardiology and is a must-attend event for anyone working or interested in the area of cardiology. During the webinar, you will hear from expert speakers who will put a spotlight on the hottest and most relevant topics. 

This live webinar is available to Members and Fellows of RCPI, doctors on RCPI training programmes, doctors on RCPI Professional Competence Schemes, all other interested physicians working in medicine, or indeed outside of medicine.

How to join this webinar

First, you must book your place at the webinar on this web page. On the day, you must sign into our virtual learning environment RCPI Brightspace.

On the day of the event, the steps are:

  • Log in to www.rcpi.ie with your username and password (the same credentials used to book this event)
  • Click on the link for RCPI Brightspace
  • In your list of courses you will see Hot Topics for Acute Physicians: Cardiology - Click on this.
  • Click on "Join the Live Webinar" - This will launch Zoom, the system we are using for live webinars

Note, the webinar will only become available to watch at 5pm on the day, but we recommend logging in ten minutes ahead of time.

To join this webinar on Zoom you will need a computer (Windows or Apple) or mobile device with internet access and speakers. 

If you're joining on a computer

If you're joining the webinar on a computer you can use the Zoom desktop website. You do not need to download the Zoom app - if you see a pop up message about the app, you can dismiss this.

The Zoom website functions best on Google Chrome.

When you click on the link for "Join the Live Webinar" you will see a message asking you to open Zoom. Click on “Open Zoom”.

You will then be asked for your name and email address. Once you’ve entered these details, click on “Join Webinar”.

If you’re joining on a mobile device

If you're watching the webinar on a mobile device you will need to download the Zoom app. To save time on the day, we recommend downloading the app in advance:

When you open the Zoom app click on “Join a Meeting”. You will need to enter the meeting ID number. The ID number for this week's event will be sent to you via email beforehand.

How to submit questions to the panel

Before the event

If you have any questions for our panel please email them to conferences@rcpi.ie and we will endeavour to have these answered as part of the event. Alternatively, you can submit questions via Twitter @RCPI_news. 

During the event

We are now using Zoom to broadcast our live webinars. When you open Zoom to watch the live webinar you will be able to submit questions to the panel during the event.

To submit questions to the panel:

  • Open the Q&A window in Zoom while you are watching the live event
  • Type your question into the Q&A box and click Send
  • Check Send Anonymously if you do not want your name attached to your question in the Q&A

It may not be possible to answer all questions we receive.

Can't attend? Recordings will be available to watch online afterwards

There are limited places available for the live webinar. If you are unable to book a place, you will be able to watch videos of all of the talks on Panopto, our video sharing platform.

 

Dr Emer Joyce

Dr Emer Joyce is currently a Consultant Cardiologist specialising in Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Cardiac Transplantation at the Mater University Hospital Dublin, returning in 2018 from a five year period in the US where she worked in two of the world’s most renowned hospitals, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School in Boston, and the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio where she was on faculty for three years as a Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiologist. She was awarded her PhD in advanced cardiac imaging in 2015 following a two-year doctoral fellowship under Prof J. Bax from Leiden University, the Netherlands and won the Euroecho Young Investigator of the Year award for her work in 2013. She is an Associate Clinical Professor at University College Dublin and was recently appointed Associate Editor of the Journal of Cardiac Failure. 

Prof Vincent Maher

President, Irish Cardiac Society

Professor Maher is a Consultant Cardiologist at Tallaght University Hospital, Clinical Professor in Trinity College Dublin and Director of Chronic Cardiovascular Disease and Cardiac Rehabilitation at Tallaght University Hospital. He was formerly Medical Director of the Irish Heart Foundation, President of the Irish Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation, President of the Irish Atherosclerosis Society, and Chairman of the Health Promoting Hospital Network in Ireland. He co-founded the Heart Watch program and developed both the Irish Heart Foundation, Physical Activity and Nutrition guidelines. His research interests involve understanding the effects of exercise, lipids and obesity on cardiovascular change. He established first hospital based peripheral artery disease rehabilitation service and developed the first dedicated cardiovascular disease prevention clinic nationally.

Dr Matthew Barrett

Dr Matthew Barrett graduated from UCD school of medicine in 2009 and completed his clinical cardiology specialist registrar training in 2016. He went on to complete an advanced cardiovascular imaging fellowship in Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, with a focus on cardiovascular MRI and CT. He currently works as a clinical cardiologist in St Vincent’s Hospital and cardiovascular imaging specialist in the Beacon Hospital. His special areas of interest include advanced cardiac imaging and multimodality assessment of fluid status in heart failure.

 

 

Dr Derek Crinion

Dr Crinion is a cardiologist at Tallaght University Hospital and its Cardiac Risk in the Young Centre. He is a graduate of Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He completed Irish Higher Specialty Training and subsequently a clinical fellowship in electrophysiology at Queen’s University in Canada. His research interests include inherited cardiac conditions and ablation for ventricular arrhythmias.
