Faculty of Public Health Winter Scientific Meeting Part I

The Faculty of Public Health Medicine will hold Part 1 of the Winter Scientific Meeting online on Wednesday, 8 December 2021.

This is a fantastic opportunity to hear about a range of developments in the field of Public Health.

The meeting will include 10 abstract presentations followed by guest speaker Dr Helen McAvoy who will address an important public health topic: 'Dying young from respiratory disease – are we making progress on reducing inequalities?'

This will be followed by a live Q&A from the audience.

About Dr Helen McAvoy

Director of Policy at the Institute of Public Health

Dr Helen McAvoy graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a primary medical degree in 1997 and worked for several years in both hospital and general practice. She completed her MD in 2000 as part of the Masters in Health Promotion programme NUI Galway. She has worked on a number of government programmes relating to ageing and older people. She is now working as Director of Policy with the Institute of Public Health in Ireland focussing on progressing the government’s health inequality agenda in Ireland and Northern Ireland. In this role, she has contributed to a number of reports and policy papers on inequalities in maternal and child health, fuel poverty, tobacco, alcohol and inequalities in the border region.

 

This event is a benefit of your Membership and Fellowship and is FREE for RCPI Trainees, Members and Fellows who are in good standing. There is a €50.00 fee for all other attendees.

Dr Carina Brehony

Dr Carina Brehony is a surveillance scientist at HPSC. She completed a two-year ECDC EUPHEM Public Health Microbiology Fellowship in 2020 working on various projects including: Campylobacter surveillance; CPE outbreak investigation; C. difficile genomics; E. coli bloodstream infections; Mycoplasma genitalium testing and; seasonal influenza resistance molecular surveillance. Prior to that she was a post-doc working on VTEC One Health with NUI, Galway and the Department of Agriculture and CPE genomics with the national CPE reference laboratory. She completed her PhD and a post-doc with Professor Martin Maiden at the University of Oxford working on the molecular epidemiology of Neisseria meningitidis.

Dr Ciara Kelly

Dr Ciara Kelly is a 3rd year Specialist Registrar in Public Health Medicine, currently working with the HSE National Cancer Control Programme.

Julie Arnott

Julie Arnott is a public health epidemiologist at the national Health Protection Surveillance Centre in Ireland. Julie graduated from University College Cork with a BSc in Public Health and Health Promotion, a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Protection, and a Masters in Public Health specialising in advanced epidemiology and biostatistics. Julie has over 13 years post-graduate experience and worked in various jurisdictions such as; the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Public Health Wales and the Health Information and Quality Authority of Ireland (HIQA). Julie is currently chair of the Surveillance Scientists/Epidemiologists Association of Ireland (SSAI).

Philippa White

Philippa White is a second year SpR in Public Health based in the Department of Public Health, HSE-South, in Cork.

Ruth Ceannt

Ruth Ceannt is a specialist registrar in Public Health Medicine. Previously, she completed basic specialist training in Psychiatry, and attained membership of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland and the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK). She has an interest in public and global mental health. Ruth holds an MSc. in Global Health (TCD) and an MPH (UCD), during which she developed skills in qualitative as well as quantitative research.

First, you must book your place at the webinar on this web page. On the day, you must sign into our virtual learning environment RCPI Brightspace.

On the day of the event, the steps are:

  • Log in to www.rcpi.ie with your username and password (the same credentials used to book this event)
  • Click on the link for RCPI Brightspace
  • In your list of courses you will see Faculty of Public Health Medicine Winter Scientific Meeting Part I. Click on this.
  • Click on "Join the Live Webinar" - This will launch Zoom, the system we are using for live webinars

Note, the webinar will only become available to watch at 10:30am on the day, but we recommend logging in ten minutes ahead of time.

To join this webinar on Zoom you will need a computer (Windows or Apple) or mobile device with internet access and speakers.

If you're joining on a computer

If you're joining the webinar on a computer you can use the Zoom desktop website. You do not need to download the Zoom app - if you see a pop up message about the app, you can dismiss this.

The Zoom website functions best on Google Chrome.

When you click on the link for "Join the Live Webinar" you will see a message asking you to open Zoom. Click on “Open Zoom”.

 You will then be asked for your name and email address. Once you’ve entered these details, click on “Join Webinar”.

If you’re joining on a mobile device

If you're watching the webinar on a mobile device you will need to download the Zoom app. To save time on the day, we recommend downloading the app in advance:

When you open the Zoom app click on “Join a Meeting”. You will need to enter the meeting ID number. The ID number for this week's event will be sent to you via email beforehand.

How to submit questions to the panel

Before the event

If you have any questions for our panel please email them to courses@rcpi.ie and we will endeavour to have these answered as part of the event. Alternatively, you can submit questions via Twitter @RCPI_news.

During the event

We are now using Zoom to broadcast our live webinars. When you open Zoom to watch the live webinar you will be able to submit questions to the panel during the event.

To submit questions to the panel:

  • Open the Q&A window in Zoom while you are watching the live event
  • Type your question into the Q&A box and click Send
  • Check Send Anonymously if you do not want your name attached to your question in the Q&A

It may not be possible to answer all questions we receive.
