This course, specially developed for doctors who are training to be Histopathologists, provides expert guidance on ethical issues relating to Histopathology, such as use of human tissue, human research, and autopsy.

About this course

This course is a blended course consisting of online content and an in-person tutorial. Throughout the online content, you will learn how to approach ethical issues related to professionalism, law and research. The tutorial element of this course covers the ethical and legal issues faced by those working in Histopathology. Case studies will be available on RCPI Brightspace in advance of the tutorial.

You must complete the online material before attending this tutorial as the tutorial builds on your completed work.

Format of course delivery

This is a blended learning programme. There are three units to complete:

  1. Ethics for Histopathology online unit – Available in RCPI Brightspace (1.5 hour)
  2. Ethics for Histopathology case study review and completion - Available in RCPI Brightspace (1 hour)
  3. Ethics for Histopathology tutorial – Takes place in-person (2.5 hours)

  • Ethical and professional issues relating to confidentiality, consent and data protection
  • The relationships between medicine, ethics and law, and where they differ
  • Applying for research ethics approval after thorough consideration of possible ethical issues
  • Ethical issues in histopathology arising from medical practice in the Irish Healthcare System
  • Ethical dilemmas from an ethical and legal framework

This course is mandatory for doctors in BST and HST in Histopathology and is available to all doctors.
