About This Course

This course has been specifically designed for and is targeted at RCPI HST Trainees in Public Health Medicine. The course covers ethical issues specific to Public Health Medicine so is best suited to Trainees in that specialty.

This course is one of two ethics courses that are mandatory for HST. This course together with Ethics Foundation comprise the entire ethics programme for HST in Public Health.

You will learn how to apply the principles of medical ethics to public health medical practice.

This is a blended course which consists of online content and virtual tutorials. The tutorial element of this course covers introduction to public health ethics, ethics and non-communicable diseases and infectious disease.

The online content is to be completed in advance of the virtual tutorial as the tutorial discussion builds on this learning.

Course Format

This is a blended learning programme. There are two units to complete. You must complete the online content before attending the tutorial:

1. Ethics for Public Health online unit- available in RCPI Brightspace, 2 hours

2. Ethics for Public Health virtual tutorial- takes place virtually, 2.5 hours.

A laptop, PC or tablet with a strong and stable internet connection is required. Participants should not use their mobile phones.

Please note: Participants must be available throughout full duration of course and cannot be working while attending the virtual tutorial. Participants are required to keep their camera on for the full duration of the tutorial. Participants need to access Brightspace to complete the online content. Pre-course work must be completed on Brightspace in advance of the virtual session.

Learning Outcomes

Apply the principles of medical ethics and how they apply to public health medicine

Understand the complexity of applying the principles of medical ethics to public health medical practice

Understand the medical legislation as it applies to public health physicians in Ireland

Understand the application of the principles of medical ethics to issues that may arise in relation to infectious diseases, immunisation etc.

Understand the challenges involved in medical ethics as they relate to global health.
