- Normal endoscopic landmarks in the upper GI tract, diagnosing hiatus hernia, reflux oesophagitis and recognition of Barrett’s (Columnar Lined Oesophagus), and explaining Barrett’s to patients
- Correct endoscopic reporting of Barrett’s (Columnar Lined) Oesophagus, techniques for identification of dysplasia (including high-definition white light and magnification, narrow band imaging, acetic acid spray), techniques for optimal biopsy and appropriate surveillance of Barrett’s (Columnar Lined) Oesophagus.
On completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Identify three key landmarks at upper GI endoscopy and explain how these landmarks allow identification of hiatus hernia, Barrett’s columnar lined oesophagus, or both
2. Describe challenges that may arise in identifying landmarks and how to deal with these to make a correct diagnosis
3. Explain Barrett’s oesophagus to patients
4. Discuss how to write a comprehensive endoscopy report, including a ‘minimum dataset’ and photographic documentation, and apply Prague classification to describe extent
5. Explain the use of enhanced imaging and acetic acid spray
6. Understand how to take biopsies and interpret those biopsies in Barrett’s oesophagus, and how to deal with diagnostic uncertainty
This 45-minute online course contains two modules:
• Diagnosis of Barrett’s Oesophagus
• Assessment of Barrett’s Oesophagus
The learning content includes clinical cases and endoscopic images and videos.
There is a multiple-choice question assessment at the end of the course where you will be expected to identify and interpret relevant endoscopic images.
The course is aimed at Trainee Gastroenterologists, general surgeons, and nurse endoscopists training in Upper GI Endoscopy
