The World Health Organisation has designated 2020-2030 as the Decade for Patient Safety.

Do you want to develop expert knowledge and skills in patient safety strategy?

This programme will provide learners with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills to be able to build a patient safety strategy for change and implement the strategy in the workplace.

This Certificate has been designed for all healthcare professionals who are looking to improve patient safety within their healthcare settings.

Format

The Certificate in Patient Safety Science is a modular-based, blended programme delivered using international best-practice principles and guidelines in teaching and learning including online and virtual classroom-based teaching.

What you will learn

On completion of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate patient safety leadership skills, including how to influence clinical teams, management and governing structures and boards
  • Analyse the need for redesign of health systems to allow change and opportunities for improvement
  • Explain how using a systems approach can solve safety challenges
  • Design a risk management system to proactively address risk
  • Implement investigations of serious incidents using appropriate methodology
  • Demonstrate how to interpret early warnings of potentially unsafe systems
  • Define the criteria for psychological safety and healthcare worker safety

About Dr Peter Lachman

Dr Peter Lachman is a Paediatrician who has been the CEO of ISQua since 2016. Under his leadership, ISQua has become a leader in quality and safety in health and healthcare, as well as being the gold standard for external evaluation and accreditation. Peter has been Lead Faculty for Quality Improvement at RCPI since 2011, directing the Diploma in Leadership and QI. He has worked closely with leaders over the past few years to raise the profile of quality and safety. Previously he was the Deputy Medical Director leading on Quality and Safety at Great Ormond Street Children Hospital in London and led national quality and safety initiatives in England for the RCPCH. He is the lead editor for the OUP Handbook on Patient Safety to be published in 2021.

Format

The Certificate in Patient Safety Science is a modular-based, blended programme delivered using international best-practice principles and guidelines in teaching and learning including online and virtual classroom-based teaching.

Teaching is delivered by internationally recognised experts incorporating interactive sessions, case-based discussions and online components.

The Certificate in Patient Safety Science is delivered over 2 Modules (outlined below).

Module Module Synopsis
Introduction to science and theory of patient safety In this module, there is a focus on developing awareness on the theories and science of patient safety and how they can be implemented in the workplace.
Practical application and methodologies of patient safety - Developing solutions In this module learners will gain the knowledge and skills on how to practically apply the theories and methodologies of patient safety in the workplace.

  • Measuring Patient Safety at a System, Organisation and National Level
  • Improving to be Safe – improvement methods for safety

 

Module 2 | Practical application and methodologies of patient safety - Developing solutions

The content that will be delivered over the course of this module is listed below:

  • Investigating and learning from Adverse Events
  • Open Disclosure
  • Caring for the Caregivers - The Second Victim
  • Enabling Medication Safety
  • Preventing and Decreasing Infections and Sepsis
  • Preventing and Limiting Diagnostic Error
  • Detecting and Limiting Deterioration
  • Managing safety in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Managing safety in a pandemic

 

How you will be assessed

Formative and summative assessments are included in the programme.

You are required to successfully complete all online course materials, attend all classroom-based modules and pass the module assessments in order to be awarded the Certificate in Patient Safety Science. Participants must also submit a project report at the end of programme.
